A 2-Day Trip to  Newport, Rhode Island (Travel Itinerary)

Spread the love

One of Rhode Island’s most cherished cities, Newport is a favorite vacation spot for those traveling up and down the East Coast. This community on Narragansett Bay’s Aquidneck Island exudes character and history.

If you have a weekend, make it count by seeing as many of the city’s best attractions as possible. What follows is a detailed 3-day Newport, Rhode Island itinerary that covers all the essentials.

DAY 1

Kickstart Your Day

Newport is home to several decadent breakfast options, including thick buttermilk pancakes, savory omelets, and breakfast burritos filled with fresh ingredients. Visit Newport Shipyard’s Belle’s Cafe for breakfast and take in the harbor sights. Outside seating at this functioning shipyard, lauded for its “greatest pancakes ever,” offers a breathtaking view of the port and a selection of genuinely spectacular mega yachts.

Newport’s Cliff walk

One of the best ways to start your three days in Newport is with a stroll that will change your life. The cliff walk is a public walkway with trails that go along the coast of Rhode Island and may be found on Newport’s eastern coastline. This route combines the natural scenery and Newport’s fascinating architectural heritage. You may view several old Newport houses from the golden period as you stroll along the 3.5-mile promenade.

The trail became the 65th National Recreation Trail in 1975 and the first in New England. An individual might expect to walk around 3.5 kilometers in one direction along the cliffs. Most of the path is in good enough shape for casual strolling, at about 70%. Wear sturdy footwear, especially in the southern half, with rougher surfaces such as jagged stairs and stone pathways.

White Horse Tavern

White Horse Tavern, located just north of Bowen’s Wharf, is a 1673 building designated as a National Historic Landmark. The White Horse Tavern is a classic Newport watering hole, the oldest restaurant in the United States and the world’s tenth oldest.

Walk Thames Street

To get to Bowen’s Wharf from Thames Street, you’ll want to take a short walk. This thoroughfare serves as the town’s primary artery and is surrounded by businesses, eateries, and watering holes for many blocks. Plan to take a stroll along Thames Street at least once in Newport, and give yourself plenty of time to delve into the surrounding neighborhood’s charming side lanes and tranquil marinas.

Cruise around Ocean Drive at sunset

One may drive around Newport’s cliffs on Ocean Drive, which is 10 miles long. When you take this journey at sunset, you’ll be treated to some of Newport’s most breathtaking scenery. Since 1906, when the first Rolls Royce was produced, this route has been a favorite of the ultra-wealthy who like to flaunt their new toys. You may take a guided tour of the island in a classic automobile or rent a car and drive and explore at your own pace. If you like, you may use your vehicle.

Day 2

Tour Breakers Mansion

Cornelius Vanderbilt’s late-nineteenth-century vacation home is awe-inspiring in its splendor. The old house, situated on the water and meticulously designed, is quite remarkable. This is a top pick among the many activities to do in Newport. The visits to the mansion are self-guided. An app may be downloaded upon arrival to offer an audio tour of the house while you explore it.

You will want to bring headphones for the tour, but don’t worry if you forget—they also provide leaflets with information on each exhibit area.

The Beach at Easton

On a hot summer day here in New England, Easton’s Beach is the ideal spot to while away a few hours. Ocean breezes, beautiful cliffside coastlines, public restrooms, and food options are all conveniently located at this beach. If you’re looking to unwind after yesterday’s strenuous walk, Easton’s beach is a great spot to take in the stunning New England scenery and do some people-watching.

Newport Trolley Tours

Trolley trips are plentiful and often go along Ocean Drive & Bellevue Avenue. The tours will include stops at well-known summerhouses (or mansions), where the interpreters will provide interesting background information.

Most trips include a narrated trolley tour and entry to a single home. The Breakers, Marble House, and Rosecliff may all be visited on tour organized by Viking Tours.

Brenton Point State Park

Brenton Point State Park encompasses the very end of Ocean Drive, at its southernmost point. Those who are traveling the region should make a pit stop here. Views of the Atlantic Ocean are expansive, and the park includes miles of hiking paths and a rocky shoreline.

You can use this park’s free space to go kite flying! Kites may be rented, and food trucks sometimes park nearby. In early July, Newport hosts the annual Newport Kite Festival.

You are now prepared for a weekend vacation of a lifetime to Newport, Rhode Island, knowing how to make the most of your time there. The charming town of Newport, Rhode Island, has all the hallmarks of classic New England, including fascinating history, delicious cuisine, and breathtaking ocean vistas, and is sure to win you over.
