When packing for an international adventure trip, there are a few key things to remember:

  1. Go as light as possible. You need less clothing than you think you do;  try to choose items that will do double duty whenever possible.  
  2. Keep your most important documents with you at all times (and keep copies where you can retrieve the information if originals are lost or stolen).  
  3. Keep essentials in your carry-on while traveling so you can still function if your main luggage gets lost.
  4. If your adventure is taking you to the backcountry and you’re not traveling with a supported group, be sure to pack “The Ten Essentials”:
  • Navigation: map, compass, altimeter, GPS device, personal locator beacon (PLB) or satellite messenger
  • Headlamp: plus extra batteries
     
  • Sun protection: sunglasses, sun-protective clothes and sunscreen
  • First aid including foot care and insect repellent (as needed)
  • Knife plus a gear repair kit
  • Fire matches, lighter, tinder and/or stove
  • Shelter carried at all times (can be a light emergency bivy)
  • Extra food Beyond the minimum expectation
  • Extra water Beyond the minimum expectation
     
  • Extra clothes Beyond the minimum expectation
