10 Places to see the Best Sunsets in the World

Spread the love

The highlight of many a traveler’s trip is watching the sunset. Yes, it happens every day and yes it might be a cliche but most will agree that there are some truly special places to watch this natural event. Compiled by both our team’s experiences and feedback from our readers here (in no particular order) are our Top 10 most beautiful sunsets in the world…

10. Taj Mahal – Agra, India

Truly a world wonder, the white marble of the Taj Mahal shines magically as the suns setting rays coat around it warmly. During the day, the heavily crowded tourist spot gets extremely busy and it would be difficult to enjoy the tranquillity the attraction can truly offer. We recommend starting early in the morning to catch sunrise at the Taj Mahal, or wait till sunset to go across the Yamuna River to Mehtab Bagh where you can enjoy the sunset view in a quieter setting.

9. Dubai Creek – Dubai, UAE

A local favourite and a tourist bucket list, catching the sunset across the Deira Creek in Dubai is a fantastic experience. Many visitors choose to ride the water taxi – a traditional abra across the creek to take in all the sights and sounds of Old Dubai. The old district still has plenty of life and entertainment and when the sun sets, the golden rays gleam across the water and reflect from the nearby buildings and through fishermen’s nets.

8. Florida Keys, USA

Located just off the southern coast of Florida, the tropical Florida Keys is a sunset seeker’s paradise. You can be in any corner and still enjoy the spectacular show. Florida Keys offer sunsets filled with a spectrum of colours from the brightest pinks and reds to deep oranges and purples.

7. Cairo, Egypt

There’s nothing more spectacular than experiencing an authentic Arabian adventure and witnessing the sun set across Cairo in Egypt. There are plenty of spots to choose from around the city and in the desert. One of the most popular choices in Cairo is out at the Pyramids of Giza, with the glowing setting sky as a backdrop. However, many travellers choose to view the sunset amongst camps and camels in the desert as the brown sand appears to glow bright orange in the sunlight. Another option is to get a look from above in any of the top floors of a tall building within the city.

6. Grundarfjordur, Iceland

To experience a sunset that makes you feel like you’ve just stepped foot into another planet, take a trip to Grundarfjordur, Iceland. This is a small mountain town that’s near a lava field, so you really have some diverse landscapes at work here. There is no sunshine between November and early February in this part of the world, so you’ll need to time your trip right to have this experience. But the summertime sunsets are nothing short of spectacular and well worth the wait. While you’re in this area, snap some photographs of the iconic Mt. Kirkjufell and surrounding mountains. This is a great place to watch whales and seals, go deep-sea fishing and birdwatching, and take a dip in a hot tub after long days of adventure.

5. Capri

Only about six kilometers long and a little more than two kilometers wide, the island has two towns: Capri and high above it, Anacapri. Apart from the glamorous international people-watching scene (the island is a favorite for celebrities and the paparazzi that follow them), the island’s chief pleasures are its scenery, natural wonders, and its lush greenery (look for acanthus leaves, the inspiration for Corinthian capitals on columns), all best appreciated from its many walking paths or by boat.No wonder the emperors Augustus and Tiberius decamped to the idyllic island of Capri to escape the bustle of ancient Rome.

4. Istanbul Turkey

The Istanbul skyline lends itself to romantic sunsets, the city is known for its countless minarets and copper-domed buildings. Istanbul spans the Bosporus so at sundown you have a Byzantine skyline of exotic eastern buildings next to the shimmering sea. The best place to watch the sun go down in Istanbul is from a rooftop terrace restaurant over a glass of champagne or cocktails. Easily one of the Top 10 of the most beautiful sunsets in the world!

3. Miyajima Japan

The Miyajima Shrine (or Itsukushima Shrine) is one of the world’s best and most beautiful places to watch the sunset. Miyajima or Shrine Island is best known for its “floating Torii Gate” built over water it looks like a mirage in the mist and makes a romantic frame for couples watching the sun go down from the wooden deck. Not only that but the water reflects the sun and gate in the water.

2. Santorini, Greece

The Greek Island of Santorini is covered with picture perfect sunset spots, and is known world-over for this. The ragged cliff towns, breath-taking views and white-washed architecture offers sunset seekers an otherworldly experience while enjoying the sunset dusk. Colours range from bright rose-tinted pinks to ivory-infused lavender, accentuated by the glowing white of the island’s buildings and reflection of the Aegean Sea.

1. Amalfi Coast

We all know the Amalfi Coast is one of the most gorgeously scenic areas in the world. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has been inspired to visit the Amalfi Coast after drooling over gorgeous Instagram photos showing colourful hillsides dotted with beautiful little buildings and dazzling blue seas below.
