Overview of Durmitor National Park

Durmitor National Park is a dramatic limestone massif that forms part of the Dinaric Alps, also known as the Dinarides. As Montenegro’s largest protected area, the park lies at the heart of a vast and dynamic landscape carved by glacial activity, intersected by rivers and hidden underground streams, all within the greater Tara River Basin Biosphere Reserve.

The terrain is crowned with around 50 jagged peaks that soar above 2,000 meters, the highest being the majestic Bobotov Kuk at 2,525 meters. These towering summits rise over expansive plateaus, wildflower-filled alpine meadows, and dense forests.

Also here, glacial lakes—often referred to as “mountain eyes”—dot the terrain like sapphire jewels. Durmitor is most renowned for its awe-inspiring canyons, particularly those of the Draga, Sušica, Komarnica, and the Tara River. The latter is the deepest gorge in all of Europe.

The park shelters a rare old-growth forest of European Black Pine and benefits from an exceptional altitudinal range of over 2,000 meters. This diversity supports over 1,600 species of vascular plants, with a remarkable number of rare and endemic species thriving within the park’s boundaries.

Wildlife in Durmitor National Park

Durmitor National Park is a thriving refuge for a remarkable array of wildlife. Here, large predators such as the elusive brown bear, grey wolf, and European wildcat roam freely through dense forests and rugged mountains. The skies above the park are alive with avian drama. The are recorded sightings of golden eagles, peregrine falcons and the rare capercaillie.

Beneath the surface of its crystal-clear rivers and glacial lakes swims an equally rich aquatic ecosystem. These are highlighted by the endangered Danube salmon—a species increasingly difficult to find elsewhere. There are also several farming communities in and around the park. Local farmers and shepherds bring their livestock to graze the high-altitude pastures during summer months.

Best Time to Visit Durmitor National Park

The best time to visit Durmitor National Park largely depends on what kind of adventure you’re seeking. If you’re drawn to hiking, rafting, or simply exploring the park’s wild beauty, the summer months from June to September are ideal. This is when the park fully opens up—trails are clear, the scenic Durmitor Ring Road is accessible, and a variety of outdoor activities are in full swing.

Though the days are generally mild, the park’s altitude means evenings can get surprisingly chilly, even in August, so pack a few extra layers. On the other hand, winter transforms Durmitor into a snow-covered wonderland. From December through March, Savin Kuk’s ski slopes welcome skiing enthusiasts. Snowshoeing through silent, powdery forests is another wintertime favorite.

Getting to Durmitor National Park

Getting to Durmitor National Park is relatively straightforward. If you make Žabljak your starting point, then it’s incredibly easy to make the trip. The town is just a short walk from the park entrance if you’re staying in the town center. If you’re coming from Kotor, expect a scenic 3-hour drive to Žabljak. Those departing from Montenegro’s capital, Podgorica, will reach Žabljak in about 2 hours.

Renting a car is highly recommended, as it not only provides flexibility to access remote trailheads. This also allows you to experience the breathtaking P14 route—a winding mountain road linking Žabljak and Plužine that’s often hailed as one of Montenegro’s most beautiful drives.

However, if a rental car isn’t in your plans, don’t worry—Durmitor is still within reach. Buses run regularly from Podgorica to Žabljak, with fares ranging from €12 to €14 and travel times averaging between 2.5 to just under 3 hours. Once in Žabljak, local taxis can help bridge the gap to trailheads or other nearby attractions, ensuring that even car-free visitors can fully enjoy this spectacular corner of Montenegro.

These point toward forest walks, scenic lakes, and gentle viewpoints.

Beyond hiking, the park is also home to the jaw-dropping Tara River Canyon, the deepest gorge in Europe. The iconic Tara Bridge offers sweeping views over the canyon and the turquoise Tara River that thunders 170 meters below. If you’re up for an adrenaline boost, the nearby Red Rock Zipline lets you fly across the canyon for an unforgettable perspective.

For a more immersive experience, rafting trips on the Tara River are a top draw—perfect for a day of thrills or a multi-day journey through Montenegro’s dramatic landscapes.
