Overview of Tortuguero National Park

Officially established in 1970, Tortuguero National Park is located in the northeastern region of Costa Rica and is one of the country’s most iconic destinations. The park has undergone several expansions over the years to better protect its extraordinary ecosystems. Its boundaries were adjusted in 1980, 1995, and 1998, enlarging its total area from 64,701.45 to 76,937 hectares.

Today, 50,284 hectares are marine territory, while 26,653 hectares make up the land area. Nearly all of the terrestrial zone—99%—is reserved for strict resource protection, with only 1% designated for visitors. The marine portion is entirely devoted to absolute conservation. The park is famed worldwide for safeguarding the Western Hemisphere’s most significant nesting beach for green turtles.

Unlike most national parks where hiking is the main attraction, Tortuguero is best explored by water. The beach trail is primarily used for observing turtles, but the heart of the park is revealed through its intricate canals. Visitors often glide along these waterways in canoes, kayaks, or motorized boats, spotting wildlife in every direction. Many local resorts even include canal tours as part of their packages.

Wildlife in Tortuguero National Park

Wildlife in Tortuguero is as rich and diverse as the ecosystem itself. Its rainforests and winding waterways teem with life, serving as critical habitats for a stunning variety of species. The park is best known for being one of the world’s most important nesting grounds for sea turtles. Here, green, leatherback, and hawksbill turtles return each year to lay their eggs along the sandy Caribbean beaches.

But turtles are just the beginning. The forest canopy echoes with the calls of howler, spider, and white-headed capuchin monkeys, while three-toed sloths lounge in the trees above. More elusive residents like jaguars, ocelots, and river otters roam through the dense vegetation. Those lucky may even spot the endangered West Indian manatee gliding gracefully through the canals.

Over 300 bird species fill the skies, including vibrant toucans, elegant herons, colorful parrots, and swift kingfishers, along with hawks and kites patrolling from above. Beneath the surface, the waterways host gar-fish, river turtles, and even the occasional bull shark. Adding to the abundance of life are countless insects and invertebrates—dragonflies darting over the canals, butterflies fluttering through the forest.

Best Time to Visit Tortuguero National Park

The best time to visit Tortuguero National Park largely depends on what you want to experience. Those keen on witnessing the extraordinary sight of sea turtles nesting should plan their trip around the turtle seasons. Leatherback turtles come ashore from March to May, while green sea turtles nest between July and October, with August offering the highest activity.

Hawksbill turtles, on the other hand, may be spotted nesting anytime between March and October. If your goal is to enjoy pleasant weather, the drier months (February to April and August to October) provide the most comfortable conditions. However, Tortuguero’s rainforest climate means occasional showers are inevitable.

Those hoping for fewer crowds while still enjoying rich biodiversity might find May or September particularly rewarding. These shoulder months balance tranquility with plenty of wildlife.

Getting to Tortuguero National Park

Reaching Tortuguero National Park from San José requires a combination of land or air travel followed by a boat, as the park has no access roads. The fastest way is to take a 30-minute flight from San José directly to Tortuguero Airport. Budget travelers can also rely o public buses.

Many of these buses travel directly from San José to La Pavona. But some combine multiple bus routes through Guapiles and Cariari before reaching the La Pavona dock. Another option is to drive a rental car to La Pavona, park it safely for a daily fee, and then continue by boat.

Once in La Pavona, you can book a shared shuttle that collects you from your hotel and drives to La Pavona dock. The ride takes roughly six and a half hours in total. A private transfer offers a more direct route for a similar cost, reducing the travel time to around four hours. Most hotels have boats that will get you to the park.

Other Activities in Tortuguero National Park

Once you arrive in Tortuguero, there is no shortage of activities to fill your days. For those who love being on the water, group canoe trips through the park’s dense rainforest canals are a personal favorite and cost around $30. Kayaking independently along the same waterways allows for a more personal adventure—just be sure to follow your guide’s advice, as caimans are present.

The beaches offer a more relaxed pace, perfect for walking, soaking up the sun, or observing turtles from a respectful distance. Birdwatching is another popular pursuit. You can also wander the quaint local high street for free or join a guided night walk in the park for $20-$30 to experience the nocturnal side of the rainforest. For thrill-seekers, ziplining is available for around $35.

Park Fees in Tortuguero National Park

Tortuguero charges varying admissions depending on nationality. International travelers are charged $15 plus tax for standard access. You’ll also pay an additional $2 if you want to explore the Cerro Tortuguero area. Costa Rican residents pay a reduced fee of just $2.

All tickets need to be purchased online ahead of time to ensure entry. If you’re visiting as part of a guided tour, these fees are already included in packages.
