Guide to Spending a weekend in Ljubljana, Slovenia
If Europe had a secret too stylish to spill, it would be Ljubljana. This pint-sized city packs in more character than some capitals ten times its size. Ljubljana has all the makings of a storybook city, with its atmospheric old town and the gentle flow of the Ljubljanica River weaving through its heart.

The riverbanks, shaded by graceful willows and lined with cobbled streets, invite you to linger in the many cozy restaurants and bars that spill onto the waterfront. Bridges arch elegantly across the water, adding to the fairytale charm that seems to follow you at every turn. The Slovenian capital is also rich in museums, striking architecture, and green spaces that make it both a cultural hub and a place of calm retreat.

Best Time to Visit Ljubljana

The best time to visit Ljubljana is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather is pleasantly mild, ideal for wandering the cobblestone streets, exploring outdoor markets, and enjoying riverside cafés without the summer crowds. Spring brings a burst of colorful wildflowers, while autumn paints the city in warm, golden hues, making it especially picturesque.
Fewer tourists also mean more affordable accommodation and a more relaxed pace around popular sights. However, early spring and late autumn can bring occasional rain or chilly evenings, so packing layers and a small umbrella is wise. Summer (June to August) is warm and sunny, perfect for soaking up outdoor festivals and café culture.
However, it also draws the largest crowds, with higher prices and busier attractions. Winter (between November and March) is the coldest season, with daytime temperatures often in the single digits. However, it’s an excellent choice for budget travelers or those hoping to enjoy the festive Christmas markets.

Best Things to Do in Ljubljana
Head to Ljubljana Castle

Perched on a hill overlooking Ljubljana’s old town, Ljubljana Castle is the city’s most iconic landmark, a medieval fortress of stout walls and commanding towers. While much of the structure visible today dates back to the 1400s, the castle’s origins reach as far back as the 13th century. Over the centuries, it has worn many hats: fortress, royal residence, powder store, prison, military hospital, and even apartments up until the 1960s.
For sweeping panoramic views of the city, climb the Viewing Tower. For foodies, there’s a Castle Café and the restaurants Gostilna na Gradu and the Michelin-listed Strelec that offer a range of dining options. Getting to the castle is simple: hop on the funicular from Krekov trg or enjoy a scenic 10-minute walk along one of the well-maintained paths.
Visit the Franciscan Church

Visiting the Franciscan Church in Ljubljana is like stepping into a salmon-pink postcard come to life. Originally built between 1646 and 1660, the church received its famous Baroque facade a few decades later, from 1703 to 1706, giving it the striking exterior that draws crowds today.
Its unique hue (originally a deeper red symbolizing the Franciscan monastic order) has fortunately faded over time to the beautiful pink we see. In my opinion, it’s far more photogenic than it would have been in its original shade. While the exterior is undoubtedly the star, the interior is worth a peek as well.
Here, you’ll glimpse lavish gold and white details, dark wood accents, an ornate ceiling, and even a glass coffin housing the remains of a saint near the altar. If you have a bit of time while exploring Ljubljana, the church is open until 8pm, making it an easy stop to add to the end of your day.
Marvel at the works of Jože Plečnik

Ljubljana is a delight for architecture lovers, particularly those with an eye for Art Nouveau and innovative urban design. Much of the city’s distinctive look is thanks to the Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. He made his mark renovating Prague Castle before returning to Ljubljana in the 1920s and ’30s.
During this period, he transformed the city with a series of remarkable projects, from the iconic Triple Bridge to the elegant colonnades at the Central Market. Other iconic works include the scenic Trnovo Embankment and the grand National University Library. Beyond Plečnik’s work, the city also boasts several stunning Art Nouveau buildings, such as the Vurnik House, the People’s Loan Building, and the Municipal Savings Building.
For those eager to dive deeper into Plečnik’s genius, check out Plečnik House in the quiet Trnovo neighborhood. It was his former home and studio, though tickets must be booked online in advance as guided tours are the only way in and spots can fill up quickly.
See all 17 Bridges in Ljubljana

Ljubljana is, without a doubt, a city built on bridges—17 of them, if you trust Google, and that sounds about right. The Triple Bridge, right in front of the Franciscan Church, is probably the most famous. Originally just a single bridge, Plečnik was tasked with widening it to handle more traffic.
Instead, he cleverly added two pedestrian bridges flanking the original and topped it off with a series of elegant pillars. Then there’s the Dragon Bridge, whose story involves Jason and the Argonauts, a dragon, and possibly some questionable travel planning. The bridge’s massive stone dragons now guard the city and make for an unforgettable photo stop.
Other Plečnik masterpieces worth crossing include Cobblers’ Bridge, Trnovo Bridge, and Butchers’ Bridge. For a seasonal treat, head to St James’ Bridge in autumn—the ivy turns a fiery red, transforming this otherwise understated bridge into a spectacular sight.
Conclusion
Ljubljana isn’t a city you tick off a list; it’s one you accidentally fall for, hard. With its café culture and countless bridges that feel whimsical, a weekend here is just enough to make you wonder why you didn’t plan for a week.
