Overview of Gir National Park
Also known as Sasan Gir, Gir National Park is a renowned wildlife sanctuary situated in the far west-central region of India, within the state of Gujarat. Spanning an impressive 545 square miles (1,412 sq km), this park is the last refuge of the Asiatic lion. The species has been steadily recovering thanks to dedicated conservation efforts and the park is the only place in the world to see Asiatic lions.
The park’s landscape is a blend of dry deciduous forests interspersed with teak trees, creating a rugged terrain of rolling hills and scrubland. Adding to its natural beauty, seven perennial rivers—Datardi, Godavari, Hiran, Machhundri, Raval, Shetrunji, and Shingoda—flow through the park.
Among them, the Hiran, Machhundri, Raval, and Shingoda rivers are dammed, forming four reservoirs that serve as prime spots for observing animals in their natural habitat. With its unique ecosystem and ongoing conservation success, Gir National Park remains one of India’s most significant wildlife sanctuaries.
Wildlife in Gir National Park

Gir National Park is a biodiversity hotspot, home to a remarkable 2,300 species of wildlife. While the park hosts only 38 species of mammals, its rich ecosystem thrives with over 300 bird species and 37 reptile species, alongside a dominant insect population. The park’s apex predators include the iconic Asiatic lion, once critically endangered in 2000 but now steadily recovering due to conservation efforts that began in 1965.
Other carnivores such as the Indian leopard, jungle cat, hyena, desert cat, honey badger, and mongoose also roam the landscape. Herbivores like blackbucks, chital, chinkara, boars, four-horned antelopes, nilgai, porcupines, rabbits, and sambar contribute to the park’s dynamic food chain.
Among its reptilian inhabitants are crocodiles, Indian cobras, monitor lizards, and tortoises. The park’s lush habitat is supported by over 500 species of vegetation, with teak and banyan trees standing tall amidst a mix of deciduous flora. This diverse plant life not only offers shelter to the mammal population but also creates an ideal environment for the abundant bird species that call Gir their home.
Best Time to Visit Gir National Park
The ideal time to explore Gir National Park is the winter months (between November and February). During these months, the park experiences pleasant weather which makes for excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. With temperatures ranging from a comfortable 10°C to 22°C, outdoor activities like safaris become far more enjoyable.
This season is particularly rewarding for spotting the park’s iconic Asiatic lions, as well as leopards and other wildlife that tend to gather near water sources. Additionally, winter attracts a variety of migratory birds, making it a fantastic time for birdwatching enthusiasts. The clear skies also create perfect conditions for photography, allowing visitors to capture stunning shots of Gir’s landscapes and wildlife.
Getting to Gir National Park

Reaching Gir National Park requires some planning, but there are several convenient options depending on your starting point. Situated in the southwest of Gujarat, the park’s entrance is at Sasan Gir Village, which also houses the reception and orientation center.
If flying in, the closest major airport is in Ahmedabad, about a seven-hour drive away. But Rajkot and Diu offer closer alternatives at three and two hours away, respectively. The most efficient way to reach Gir is by train to Junagadh, which has direct rail connections from both Ahmedabad and Rajkot.
From there, Sasan Gir is a manageable 90-minute drive, with taxis readily available or regular public buses providing an economical option. Private buses from Ahmedabad can drop passengers right at Sinh Sadan guesthouse and the park’s reception area, though the journey takes around seven hours.
Also, we recommend you explore the Gir Interpretation Zone at Devalia for a structured wildlife experience before entering the main park. The zone is located about 12 kilometers west of Sasan Gir and is a beautiful curtain raiser.
Other Activities in Gir National Park
While most visitors come to Gir National Park to spot its iconic predators like Asiatic lions, there are plenty of other ways to experience this sanctuary. The most popular choice is a guided jeep safari along designated. For those seeking more flexibility, private vehicles are permitted for an additional fee, though hiring a guide remains mandatory, and certain restrictions apply.
Alternatively, a shorter minibus tour through the park’s Interpretation Zone provides a more accessible option. It allows visitors to observe a variety of wildlife—including lions—within a fenced-off area. Birdwatchers are also drawn to Gir’s rich avian population, with over 300 species to spot, including the critically endangered white-backed and long-billed vultures.
A specialized two-day birdwatching tour, led by local experts, accommodates both small and large groups, making it an excellent way to appreciate the park’s feathered residents. Another unique experience is meeting the Maldhari, a semi-nomadic tribal herder community.
Their way of life has endured despite the challenges posed by Gir’s formidable predators, which claim a significant portion of their livestock. However, hiking is strictly prohibited due to safety concerns, as lion encounters are a real and frequent occurrence.
