Traveling in the fall is fantastic since there are fewer visitors, cheap airfares, and better deals than in the summer. You can also take in the stunning countryside made even more incredible by the autumn leaves. Any of these fantastic locations is a great choice if you’re considering a fall getaway.

Scottish Highlands, Scotland

The Highlands is in a region already known for their breathtaking nature. It is one of the most wonderful sites in Europe to observe gorgeous autumn colors despite the chilly temperatures. Knock Hill, near Loch Tummel and the Pass of Killiecrankie, offers some of the best vistas. The rivers and lochs of Perthshire, also known as Big Trees Country, reflect the variety of copper- and gold-covered hillsides. You can enjoy beautiful views from the crest of the Highlands to the north by taking the steep. But not taxing, hike to Knock Hill through mixed forests to heathery vistas.

The world’s tallest hedge is also in Perthshire, 100 feet tall. Early in the fall, the leaves begin to change, reaching their peak by the end of September or the beginning of October. One of the best seasons for spotting the nation’s diverse and abundant wildlife is autumn.

Additionally, it’s a ‘whiskey heaven’ that enthusiasts shouldn’t miss.

Rocky Mountains, Colorado

Colorado is famous for its stunning aspen display. Covering the state’s mountains in magnificent golden bronze and brilliant yellow hues. The state’s gorgeous Rockies are one of the best places to experience. At more than 12,000 feet above sea level, Independence Road is the highest paved pass in North America. It reaches its highest point, with sharp mountain peaks rising into brilliant blue skies above a stunning array of fall foliage.

Ohio Pass, which connects Gunnison and Crested Butte. It is another of the state’s most picturesque fall-driving roads. Before reaching the peaks of the West Elk Wilderness and The Castles, which display the eroded volcanic remains rising north of Gunnison. The route travels through the Ohio Creek Valley, which is home to farmland and cattle ranches.

Thingvellir National Park, Iceland

In Iceland, the days are still long during the fall, and the temperature is still well within reason. The aurora borealis, a blanket of illuminations made up of myriad colors of green, blue, red, and yellow, reappears around mid-September and lasts through the end of the winter. It is one of nature’s most beautiful light displays. The beautiful Thingvellir National Park is further enhanced by the presence of willow, birch, and other heath family species.

The great northern diver congregates in flocks and breeds along the banks of Lake Thingvallavatn. The park contains the biggest natural lake in Iceland. Thingvellir is home to Gullfoss, also famous as Golden Falls or Iceland’s Niagara Falls. This beautiful waterfall rushes down in two steps, one 36 feet high and the other 72 feet high, plummeting into the more than one-mile-long canyon below. It is set along the renowned Golden Circle in the upper reaches of the River Hvita. Another must-see is the Strokkur geyser, located in the heart of a geothermal region surrounded by boiling springs. It may reach heights of 65 feet and erupts once every four to eight minutes.

Switzerland

Switzerland is beautiful in the fall, especially from mid-September to mid-October, when the weather is most likely cooperative. The very attractive city of Lugano is located in the southern part of the nation, close to the Italian border along the shore of Lake Lugano. The hot summer weather has given way to a gentler climate and an orchestrated display of vibrant colors.

Wine lovers might want to visit the northern beaches of Lake Geneva. Where the 2,050 acres of historic vineyards known as the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces cover the lower mountain slopes each fall. This 21-mile Swiss wine route runs from Ouchy in Lausanne to Chateau de Chillon Castle. Where hikers can stroll and sample their way through the vineyards. Follow the yellow arrows that state the route through medieval villages and active vineyards. Pubs, restaurants, and nearby wine cellars serve as convenient rest places.

Wicklow Mountains, Ireland

The Emerald Isle is beautiful in the fall. Off-season travel results in lower airfares as well as fewer visitors. B&B owners enjoy pleasant weather and have more time to spend with guests. There can be no assurances, but the air is crisp and chilly, and there are clear, blue skies with gorgeous golden leaves on the trees. Autumn in the Wicklow Mountains is breathtaking, and many beautiful hiking trails exist to explore. Also includes this amazing journey from Lough Tay to Lough Dan.

You can also go to historical places like Glendalough. It is one of Ireland’s most important monastic sites that was established in the sixth century by St. Kevin. There are several quaint bars where you may warm up by a roaring fire while sipping an Irish coffee or a pint of Guinness if a storm happens to sweep in.
