Best Gyms in Athens

Spread the love

Athens isn’t just about ancient ruins, souvlaki, and philosophical debates that have shaped our world. It’s also a city that takes fitness seriously—perhaps a nod to its Olympic legacy or the fact that climbing up to the Acropolis is a workout in itself. Nevertheless, the city doesn’t square up confidently against other European cities we have discussed when it comes to work out spots.

Am not saying the gyms in Athens are terrible, I am just saying they might not cater to every gym rat out there. However, there are a few places that truly stand out and the gym culture across the city is quite strong. So, there’s plenty of room for improvement. And who knows maybe in a few years, Athens might be largely associated with gyms. For now, here are the best gyms in Athens;

Holmes Place

Holmes Place is perhaps the most talked-about gym in Athens. Conveniently located in the Monastiraki district, it sits right in the city’s beating heart. The gym is spacious, with plenty of treadmills, a solid selection of machines, and even a 25-meter swimming pool tucked away in the basement. Holmes Place is also one of the few gyms in Athens that exudes a “premium” atmosphere.

That said, it’s not without its flaws. The weights area feels cramped, the ceilings are low, and the equipment has seen better days. During peak hours, the place turns into a full-blown cardio colosseum, and finding space can be a challenge. Still, for those craving a gym with a hint of trendiness, Holmes Place remains one of the only viable options in Athens.

Bodyshape

Bodyshape sits just north of Athens’ city center, and while it’s certainly convenient, it doesn’t exactly scream inspiration. Compared to the sleek and social buzz of Holmes Place, this gym feels more like a practical pit stop for those who simply want to get their workout done and move on.

The ground floor hosts a handful of machines, benches, and squat racks, while the basement squeezes in dumbbells, a chest-supported row setup, and a few ab machines. Like many gyms in the city, the ceilings are low and the space compact, giving it a bit of a bunker-like feel.

Pagratio Gym

For many locals, Pagratio is easily one of the city’s best gyms and it’s easy to see why. About a 20-minute stroll from Athens’ bustling center, this compact gym makes impressive use of its limited space. The equipment is relatively new and includes everything from multiple bench racks and machines to an enviable range of dumbbells.

There’s also a small but efficient functional training zone for those who like to mix things up, plus a pilates studio and a spinning room that keeps the energy high. And when the summer heat hits, Pagratio takes fitness to the rooftop with open-air classes. These sessions combine killer workouts with panoramic views—because nothing says motivation like sweating it out under the Athenian sky.

Yava Fitness

Yava Fitness is one of the major gym chains in not just Athens but Greece as a whole. However, its main branch in Athens falls short of expectations. The facility shows clear signs of wear, with dated equipment and a limited selection of machines that make workouts feel more frustrating than fulfilling.

Its proximity to the city center adds to the chaos, as the gym becomes overcrowded during peak hours, leaving little room to train comfortably. Other Yava locations in quieter neighborhoods might offer more space if you’re a stickler for space and quiet. But if you’re simply about keeping your work routine, it will do just fine.

Golden Gym

Golden Gym is one of Greece’s prominent fitness chains with multiple branches scattered across Athens. Its main location sits conveniently about 20 minutes north of Monastiraki. The gym itself is notably spacious (at least compare to the ones on our list). It features an impressive range of machines, free weights, and dumbbells that cater to nearly every kind of workout.

Also compared to other gyms in Athens, Golden Gym ranks a little higher in terms of quality and equipment variety. However, it doesn’t quite reach the upscale experience offered by Holmes Place. Still, for those seeking a solid, reliable gym in Athens without the luxury price tag, Golden Gym strikes a satisfying balance between convenience, space, and substance.

Mega Gym

Mega Gym lives up to its name, offering one of the most spacious and modern fitness environments in Athens. Unlike many of the city’s compact gyms, this facility boasts an expansive open floor plan filled with up-to-date equipment that caters to every kind of workout. The sense of space is a refreshing change in a city where fitness centers often feel more like broom closets with dumbbells.

Its only drawback is its location—situated well outside the city center, it requires a metro ride of about 30 minutes or more depending on where you live. Still, for those who value room to move and a genuinely contemporary gym experience, the commute is often well worth the effort.

Fitness Club Athlos

Fitness Club Athlos has been a cornerstone of Athens’ fitness scene for more than three decades. Despite spending close to 30 years in operations, it’s one of the more modern gyms in Athens. Spread across 600 square meters and four levels, the facility offers just enough room for both serious training and casual workouts.

Its equipment is also cutting-edge, and the wide selection of group classes caters to every fitness preference. You’ll get everything from strength training to cardio and holistic wellness programs designed to balance body and mind. It’s an ideal option for those staying in the southern suburbs.

Gold’s Elite Athletes

While other gyms in Athens might have obvious flaws, this is one of the near perfect gyms. Located in Ilioupoli, Gold’s Elite Athletes is one of Athens’ top-tier fitness centers. The facility offers an extensive range of programs, from tailored personal training sessions to dynamic CrossFit workouts and engaging group classes designed to challenge all fitness levels.

Its reputation rests on the combination of high-quality equipment and the expertise of professional trainers who prioritize performance and precision. Gold’s Elite Athletes is particularly suited for athletes seeking to maintain consistency and intensity in their training, even while away from home.

Conclusion

Athens, it turns out, is more than just an open-air museum of marble and mythology. It’s also a place where fitness is as much a part of modern life. While the gyms might not meet your storied standards, many of them more than make up for it with either exceptional workout routines or modern equipment. So, whether you are trying to keep up with your routine or want to start one, there’s a gym for you.
